Helfer was born in rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis and Elaine Helfer. The two are born to German, English, Swedish and Norwegian origin. She attended Stettler's William E. Hay Composite High School. The three sisters she shares with lived on their family's wheat farm. Helfer was spotted at 17 by a modeling agency scout when she was waiting in line at the movie theater.
